Brewers Corbin Burns set several MLB strikeout records before releasing his first outing of the season

Go ahead, Kenley Jenson. We’ve got a new strikeout record-holder in the books.

Breweries pitcher Corbin Burns recorded his 52nd strike of the season on Thursday against the Cardinals. He did so without recording a single walk, crossing Jenson’s 51 straight strike-out mark without a walk.

Burns’ mark also did not end at 52. He eventually extended the streak to 58, setting another MLB record.

Prior to Thursday, the record was 56 for no-time consecutive strikes by Kurt Schilling and Gerrit Cole. Cole’s record is still active, so he will have a chance to overtake Burns.

Burns’ streak came to an end with Tommy Edman in the fifth inning. He wasn’t beating himself up for him after the game.

“This is a walk. It happens, ”Burns said. “Not having a guy walk so far in a season is not something I dreamed of.”

In fact, many will not. Even after Edman walked, Burns owns a 58–1 strike-to-walk ratio, leading MLB by a large margin. Cole is next at 26–1.

Burns played hearty applause from the crowd in Milwaukee after Jenson passed. He praised the acceptance of his achievement.

“It was great,” Burns said, per Jessie Rogers of ESPN. “Whenever you find them standing behind you in this way, making you happy, it definitely gives you some coolness. It was a good moment to do it at home. “
