The Department of Education’s Chancellor Richard Carranza is overseeing the country’s largest school system after three controversial years, city officials said in a surprise announcement on Friday.
His last day will be March 15 – and he will be replaced by current Bronx Executive Superintendent Meesha Ross-Porter, according to DOE.
In a press talk with Mayor Bill de Blasio, Caranaja said, “It is an honor to serve as a chancellor and a living from the bottom of my heart. I want to thank you for serving me and my children Am. “
Carranza, 54, grew emotionally, elaborating the reason behind his sudden departure.
“Make no mistake, I’m a New Yorker, not by birth but by choice. A New Yorker who has lost -” he broke down, while fighting with tears,
After composing himself, he continued, “11 families and close childhood friends to the epidemic.” And a New Yorker who quite clearly needs to take time to grieve. I think I can take that time because we are in that place and we are working together. “
Karanja postponed some achievements under his administration.
“In the largest school system in America, we made true progress in demolishing structures and policies that are the products of decades of old racism,” he said. “Like suspending school screens and we finally brought mental health to the headlines.”
De Blasio thanked Karanja for his service.
The Hizoner said, “I praise you for everything you have done and we thank you and are about to miss you.”
Born in South Jamaica, Queens, Ross-Porter will become the city’s first black woman to take the helm of the nation’s largest school district.
“The first thing I learned from my favorite teacher – my mummies – is the importance that a teacher builds in the life of every youth,” she said, also crediting other teachers who made an impression in their lives. “It is my duty and responsibility to go ahead with my whole life and bend over to see every student and create opportunities for them.”
Ross-Porter said it was a top priority for his administration to take diversity initiatives to “remove obstacles” in every bore.
“The reality is isolation and I’m not really getting away from the importance of looking at inequalities around admissions processes and really moving forward to the ways that we can create opportunities and access for all students in New York City, ” He said.
She also said that she would focus on reopening the high school in September to prepare in-person learning and a plan to open all schools.
Ros-Porter will become the city’s first black woman to take the helm of the country’s largest school district.
Carranza called his successor “the born and born New Yorker, who eats, drinks, sleeps, and thinks about New York and New York’s children all the time.”
“I am very proud that this mayor has chosen the first African American black chancellor to take the baton,” he said.
From the beginning of his administration, Carranza pointed to the upper caste as the focal point of his administration – a situation that drew applause from some quarters but intense opposition from others.
The Arizona native attracted fierce opposition, particularly from Asian community groups, who objected to various initiatives that would drastically reduce their numbers in top city schools.
Kairana’s initial controversy in his administration came to light when he retweeted a story by a group of Manhattan parents objecting to a policy change.
“WATCH: Wealthy white Manhattan parents angrily rant against plans to bring more black children into their schools,” the posting read.
The tweet was a precursor to things to come for the remainder of Kairana’s time in New York.
Heads of vocal schools often clash with parents in public meetings – and once abruptly left a chaotic Queens gathering during a heated exchange with a mother over school safety.
The DOE claimed on Friday that Kairana advanced the nation’s largest school system and cited evidence in graduation rates and gains in other fundamental matrices.
But critics have long accused education officials with lowering educational standards to create compelling statistics – a claim that precedes Kairana.
In announcing her appointment, DOE officials praised Porter as an effective DOE veteran with experience at all levels of senior administration.
“As a lifelong New Yorker, a product of our city’s public schools, and a career teacher, serving as Chancellor is an honor for my life,” she said in a statement. “Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Karanja have laid an incredible foundation for me and I am ready to hit the ground running and lead New York City’s schools to the fullest.”
But Porter has also seen his share in controversies.
She raised eyebrows after throwing herself a $ 45,000 bash to celebrate her promotion to the top spot in 2019.
Wearing a tiara, Porter entered the packed ballroom in a glass lift during the event.
Carranza and Porter are expected to arrive with De Blasio at 10 a.m. today for a press conference.
