Child survivor of Italy cable car crash asks for dead parents

The five-year-old who was the sole survivor of a cable car crash in the Italian Alps that killed 14, including five of his immediate family members, woke up in an Italian hospital asking “Where’s mom and dad?”

It’s not clear if Eitan Biran, who made it out alive when the cable car plunged 20 feet into the side of a mountain near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy last week, knows that his parents, two-year-old brother and great grandparents are dead.

Amit Biran and his wife Tal Peleg-Biran died along with their son youngest son Tom Biran, their 5-year-old Eitan Biran survived after a cable car accident on Mottarone mountain in Italy killed 14.

The child, who escaped with multiple broken bones, was saved by the embrace of his father, who died when the gondola crashed to the ground, a hospital spokesperson said, according to the Times of Israel.

His aunt, who works as a doctor in Italy, has been by his bedside along with his grandmother. His parents, Amit Biran, 30, and his wife Tal Peleg-Biran, 26, as well as their son Tom have all been buried in Israel.

Wreckage at the scene
The cable car system — which operates from the town of Stresa on Lake Maggiore to Mottarone mountain in the Alps — had “anomalies” since resuming service in late April, the outlet said.

Italian authorities arrested three men on Wednesday connected to Ferrovie Mottarone, the company that manages the cableway, saying the emergency brakes had been deactivated.

The cable carrying the gondola snapped last Sunday when the cable car was nearing the end of its journey to the top of Mottarone mountain.
