Chris Russo visited his son, Colin, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this past weekend, and naturally took it upon himself to find out what kids these days are — or, in this case, aren’t — watching or listening to.
“I did a little quiz, to get a little sense of what America’s youth is on top of. I did not meet one kid — and they’re all great kids — who had, forget seen, but had heard of ‘Shawshank Redemption,’” Russo said on his daily SiriusXM show, “Mad Dog Unleashed.”
He was flummoxed.
“That to me, is a top-five movie of all-time. It’s a male bonding movie if there ever was one,” Russo said.
Russo talked about how when he went to college he had seen the classic movies of 25 years prior, like “Best Years of My Lives,” “Gone With the Wind” and “Wizard of Oz.”
“Second thing is, you know I’m gonna play the musical quiz,” Russo said. “If you think they’ve heard of the Mamas and the Papas, or Crosby, Stills, and Nash — even The Doors. Blank stares. What songs? I had trouble even getting them to have heard of the Eagles. I was shocked.”
Russo also mentioned that before the Wisconsin-Northwestern game on Saturday, he was stunned to walk down fraternity row at 9 a.m. local time and find a scene that resembled New Year’s Eve with the drinking.
As someone who went to Wisconsin, hearing about this scene was, let’s just say, unsurprising. Those football games at 11 a.m. are a real test of strength and fortitude for the student body.
