As all of us who have played youth and high-school sports can attest, there often is an unbreakable bond among teammates that time does not erase.
The prospect of playing alongside one of your hometown, childhood friends professionally is even rarer, and it makes the tragic events of Oct. 11, 2006 difficult for former Yankees star Jason Giambi to discuss 15 years later.
“It was just devastating, and it still is 15 years later,” Giambi told Post Sports+ last week about Monday’s anniversary of the death of pitcher Cory Lidle, his teammate at South Hills High School in West Covina, Calif. , and again with the Oakland A’s in 2001 and with the Yankees in the latter part of the 2006 season. “I can’t believe it’s been that long already.”
Lidle, 34, died alongside 26-year-old flight instructor and friend Tyler Stanger when the small plane they were copiloting crashed into an Upper East Side apartment building four days after the Yankees had been eliminated by the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 AL Division Series.
