El Chapo’s wife jailed for drug trafficking

Guzman, the beauty queen wife of drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo”, is drenched in her newly released mugshot as she faces life behind bars following her arrest on drug trafficking charges on Monday.

Emma Coronel Espuero, 31, is set to appear before a federal judge in Washington DC on Tuesday afternoon. A Justice Department spokesman said he would have to spend life in prison if convicted on the charges.

A spokesman said that Coronel was booked into a local prison in Alexandria, Virginia on Monday, which deals with in-house inmates with the US Marshals.

He was busted Monday at Dales Airport in Northern Virginia on charges of participating in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana for import into the US.

She accused Altiplano of escaping from prison on 11 July 2015 in Mexico to help her husband play an expanded role.

Coronel, a dual US-Mexico citizen, married Guzman in 2007, and two years earlier their high-profile Brooklyn trial was an ongoing fixture. He was sentenced to life in prison in July 2019.
