Frank Vogel out as Lakers coach after disappointing season

The Lakers will reportedly be in the market for a new head coach.

After failing to reach the playoffs in a wildly disappointing season, Frank Vogel is expected to be out as Lakers coach, according to ESPN. The team plans to inform Vogel of their decision as early as Monday, according to the report.

“I haven’t been told s–t,” Vogel told reporters after the Lakers’ 146-141 overtime win over the Nuggets Sunday night. “And I’m gonna enjoy tonight’s game, celebrate wh at these young guys did, in terms of scratching, clawing, getting back in this game, getting a W, and we’ll deal with tomorrow, tomorrow.”

After trading for star Russell Westbrook in the offseason, the trio of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Westbrook were expected to compete for an NBA championship. Under Vogel, however, the Lakers finished the regular season 11th in the Western Conference with a 33-49 record.

Vogel, 48, took over ahead of the 2019-2020 season, and subsequently won the NBA championship, which took place in the bubble at Disney due to COVID-19, with James and Davis.

Vogel’s second season in charge, however, ended with a first-round playoff exit to the Suns. He leaves with a 126-98 record with the Lakers, who closed the season with the win on Sunday.
