Summer is here, and with it comes a heat wave of sizzling new TV to dig into. From superheroes to fitness gurus, this season boasts a wealth of offerings for everyone. Here are all the colorful characters to keep an eye out for.
“Loki,” June 9 on Disney+
The latest MCU series is an adventure putting the superhero world’s favorite trickster at the forefront. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is brought to the mysterious Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization that monitors time. There, analyst Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) gives Loki a choice to be erased from existence or help fix the timeline. The ensuing adventure sends Loki hurtling through history.
“Blindspotting,” June 13 on Starz
Based on the 2018 Daveed Diggs movie of the same name, the comedy show follows Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones, reprising the role from the movie), a mom in Oakland, Calif., who lives with her partner Miles (Rafael Casel, also reprising the role) and must move in with his mother and half-sister when Miles is incarcerated.
“Physical,” June 18 on AppleTV+
Rose Byrne stars in this dramadey set in the 1980s about Sheila Rubin (Byrne) an unsatisfied stay at home wife to a politician who finds an outlet through aerobics. Eventually, she rises to become a fitness guru.
“Kevin Can F–k Himself” June 20 on AMC (9 p.m.)
This new dark comedy centers on Allison McRoberts (Annie Murphy, “Schitt’s Creek”), a typical sitcom wife to a slob husband who often makes her the butt of his jokes (satirizing shows such as “Kevin Can Wait”) — until Annie decides to revolt against her life.
“Leverage: Redemption,” July 9 on IMDb TV
This action crime drama is a revival of “Leverage,” which originally aired on TNT (2008-2012) and followed a team carrying out heists to fight corporate injustices against ordinary people. “Redemption” brings back original stars including grifter Sophie (Gina Bellman), hacker Alec (Aldis Hodge), weapons expert Eliot (Christian Kane), and professional thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf).
“Wellington Paranormal,” July 11 on The CW (9 p.m.)
Created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi as a spinoff of their “What We Do In The Shadows” universe — which includes a 2014 movie and ongoing FX series about goofy vampire roommates), “Wellington Paranormal” follows the adventures of Officers O’Leary (Karen O’Leary) and Minogue (Mike Minogue) in the titular New Zealand city as they investigate supernatural occurrences.
“Miracle Workers: Oregon Trail,” July 13 on TBS (10:30 p.m.).
This far-too underrated anthology comedy series has paired Daniel Radcliffe with Steve Buscemi for two seasons so far in various stand-alone stories — including Season 1’s afterlife setting and Season 2’s dark ages. Season 3 will put them in the Wild West, playing a preacher (Radcliffe) and an outlaw (Buscemi).
“Schmigadoon!” July 16, AppleTV
Starring Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong (“SNL”), this musical comedy is a parody of famous 1947 Broadway musical “Brigadoon.” The show follows a couple on a backpacking trip who discover a magical town that’s a living 1940’s musical — but they can’t leave it until they find true love.
“Ted Lasso,” AppleTV+, July 23
He took the world by storm in Season 1, and now he’s back. In the first season of this sports comedy, creator/ star Jason Sudeikis played slightly buffoonish but big-hearted titular character Ted Lasso, who was brought in to coach a Premiere League football team in London despite being an American football coach with little knowledge of the sport. Season 2 will continue his adventures along with team owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), surly Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), and spirited model Keeley Jones (Juno Temple).
