Giants’ Dave Getelman opens for business below

There was a time, Dave Gatelman says, when he was going to do it.

“This’ is something he has never done, running as a general manager in eight NFL drafts (five for the Panthers, the last three for the Giants).”

Gatelman was going to trade – wait for it – down.

“Sometimes you have a trade and the team that is doing the business in front of you, gets up in front of you,” Gatelman said. “We’ve been like this with us. We’ve got a trade, we’ve got a trade. So-and-selects, no trade. ‘Dave, bye,’ and they hung up the phone on me. So that’s what happened, ‘”

Gatelman characterized his track record of never trading below “is almost becoming an urban myth,” and he reiterated that he is not opposed to going down in a draft.

“I’ve tried, I really have,” he said.

They tried it like a year ago. The Giants had the No. 36-overall pick in the 2020 draft and found a team that wanted to be traded to that spot in the second round. Gatelman would have pulled the trigger and received extra picks in return, if not for one factor: he craved safety Xavier McCanecky. Once Gatelman saw that McKinney was on the board at number 36, the trade was knocked down.

Next week, the owner of the No. 11-overall pick, it could be a major opportunity for Gaeltman to give him another chance, especially if he believes he can get an edge if he likes a few spots in the first round. Does. Finding a business partner is always a challenge, though.

Frankly, none of this has caused any resentment for the 70-year-old Gettleman. Earlier in the week, Gaetelman was reprimanded in a comment by Daniel Jeremia, an NFL Network draft analyst. Jeremiah said, “I think we’ll see a right turn in the NASCAR race before we see Dave Gatelman trading back.”

Who got the last laugh on Thursday night in the first round of the draft?

“Honest, I’ve tried to trade back, but it’s been worth it,” Getman said. “I am not running. I refuse to do it. If someone wants to do bad business, God bless them. ”

Trading will give the Back Giants additional draft capital that they can use, as they go into the draft with just six picks. He dropped his fifth-round pick up for the Jets in a trade for Leonard Williams and sent his seventh-goal pick for cornerback Isaac Yiadom to the Broncos. The Giants traded Marcus Golden to the Cardinals to add a second sixth-round pick.

Four other teams have just six picks. The Seahawks have a league-low three picks.

“I’m very comfortable with six picks,” Gettman said. “With all the pix we have in this draft, I’m fine.”
