Homeless man confesses to killing woman in South Street seaport

According to police and sources, a homeless man has admitted beating and killing a 19-year-old woman whose body was found wrapped in plastic at South Street Seaport on Saturday.

On Sunday, sources said 25-year-old Austin Bohm made a statement to detectives after attempting to test himself in the psychiatric ward of Bellevue Hospital on Saturday.

Police identified the victim of the slain Fulton fish market as Roselle Sanchez, who was also homeless.

The motive for the murder was not immediately clear.

Police said another 20-year-old homeless suspect, Christian Mercado, has also been charged in the case.

Both men face second-degree murders.

Sources said that the police tracked down the suspects after the person making the 911 call, known as his friend “Zozo”. He was released to show the victim’s body Fulton took to the Fish Market building and identified Bohm as the killer.

The dead woman’s boyfriend and another friend found her corpse on a second-floor stairway of 95 South St. near FDR Drive, police and sources said.

Locals said that homeless people have since occupied the building – an important part of South Street Seaport’s bustling fish market, which relocated to the Bronx in 2005.
