It happened Tuesday, when MLB commissioner Rob Manfred canceled the first two series of the regular season after the league and the MLBPA couldn’t reach a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement.
Among the primary sticking points in the negotiations is the competitive balance tax. The payroll threshold for the tax to apply was at $210 million last season; players want that figure raised to $238 million in 2022 while the league countered with $220 million.
