How to pronounce Elon Musk and Grimes’ baby name Exa Dark Sideræl

Grimes and Elon Musk quietly welcomed their second child via surrogate late last year, opting for yet another unique baby name.

The exes – who also share son X Æ A-12 (aka “Y”) – named their daughter Exa Dark Sideræl.

Knowing it would already cause confusion among fans, Grimes explained how to pronounce the “fire” moniker in her new cover story for “Vanity Fair.

While “Exa” and “Dark” are phonetically pronounced as expected, Grimes clarified that Sideræl is pronounced “sigh-deer-ee-el.”

Exa is in reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS (the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second), while Dark, according to Grimes, represents “the unknown.”

“People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons,” she explained. “Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.”

As for Sideræl, Grimes said it’s “a more elven” spelling of sidereal, “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.”

Grimes added that the full name she and Musk settled on required compromise on her part, as the eccentric songwriter feared Exa was a bit too dull.

“I was fighting for Odysseus Musk,” she shared. “A girl named Odysseus is my dream.”

Grimes and Musk – who were once “fluid” partners, but split once again sometime after the interview was conducted – publicly questioned each other’s explanations of their first child’s name back in 2020.

Musk also shares five teenage sons with ex-wife Justine Wilson: Damian, Saxon, Griffin, Xavier and Kai. Their son Nevada died of sudden infant death syndrome when he was just 10 weeks old.
