Jaredred Kellnik injured amidst the Mariners’ service-time drama

PEORIA, Ariz. – Seattle Mariners’ top prospect Jared Kelnick will be sidelined due to a tight joint muscle in his left knee.

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said the MRI revealed the injury on Saturday. No timeline was given for the return of the outfielder.

“Frustrated that Jarrad will be sidelined, we are relieved that the long-term outlook is positive,” said Depoto. “We all look forward to seeing him back on the field in the near future.”

Kelnick was injured during his first at-bat on Friday against the Chicago White Sox. Kalinic reached an error, but appeared upset after reaching first base. Kalinic remained in the game and was later replaced in the innings.

21-year-old Kellinic, who collided with Seattle’s first home run against the Cubs earlier this week, has been the center of attention during spring training.

Kelnick’s arrival at Major was part of comments made by former team president and CEO Kevin Mather, which indicated that Seattle was considering manipulating Kelnik’s service time.

Kelnick and his agent attacked the Mariners in comments made to USA Today following Mather’s resignation last month. Earlier this week, Kellenic said he is using those words as inspiration.

“I’m a contestant,” Kelenik said. “I’m a very motivated person. After you say that, you know, something like that comes out and I think you can see it on one of two ways: one, you can sit down and think about it. You can pout, or you can use it as inspiration and let it drive me even more. That’s where I’m at. Every day I’m driving it. “
