C.J. Mosley’s availability for Sunday’s game against the Patriots will go “down to the wire,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Friday.
The team’s starting middle linebacker worked in the rehab area and didn’t practice for a third straight day with a hamstring injury suffered during the Jets’ loss to the Falcons in London nearly two weeks ago.
Saleh said that rookie Jamien Sherwood likely would assume play-calling duties for the defense if Mosley is unable to play in Foxborough.
“He’s such a seasoned veteran and he’s been through these situations, so really, it’s relying on the player to make the sound decision for not only himself, but the organization and the team,” Saleh said “You also don’t want to go out there, play the first series and now you’re out and now our depth is hit.
“But C.J. is very smart, he’s been working relentlessly and if he’s feeling it on Sunday, he’ll be rolling.”
Mosley officially has been listed as doubtful for the game, but Saleh added that a final determination won’t be made until Sunday’s morning workout at Gillette Stadium.
Earlier this week, Mosley called this injury “a day-to-day thing,” but he acknowledged thinking about a similar situation in 2019 in which he attempted to come back early from a groin injury too soon and suffered a setback.
Saleh also said tight end Tyler Kroft (back) “doesn’t look good” and he’s been ruled out for Sunday’s game.
Saleh’s weekly T-shirt selection honored Robin Rosa, the head coach at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station, L.I., whose team has started the season 6-0.
“An undefeated coach with six wins. Rub some off, see if we can get a dub,” Saleh said, referring to a win.
Running back Tevin Coleman (hamstring) was limited in practice and has been listed as questionable. Cornerback Justin Hardee (non-injury related) did not practice.
