LAS VEGAS — Connor McDavid had the chance to make NHL history Friday night — if he had won the fastest skater challenge of the annual skills competition for a fourth time. But the Oilers star was edged out by the Blues’ Jordan Kyrou, the Kings’ Adrian Kempe and … the Rangers’ Chris Kreider.

Finishing in third place, Kreider skated his lap in 13.664 seconds, which isn’t that far from the 13.509 he recorded in his last appearance, two years ago. McDavid, who won from 2017-19, wasn’t far behind, rounding the ice in 13.690 seconds for fourth. In 2020, McDavid came in second behind the Islanders’ Mathew Barzal with a time of 13.215 seconds.

Slotting in after McDavid, the Avalanche’s Cale Makar completed his lap in 13.834 seconds. Winnipeg winger Kyle Connor came in sixth (13.851), while the Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin finished seventh (14.116) and the Capitals’ Evgeny Kuznetsov came in last.

Kreider, 30, was the oldest participant in the fastest skater competition. While Kuznetsov is 29, the rest of the skaters were 23-25.
