A favorite might have arrived in the Raiders coaching search.
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has emerged as a candidate and is expected to interview with the organization, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Additional reporting from The MMQB’s Albert Breer said that McDaniels is interested in the position. Breer added that in the past few weeks, the Raiders have interviewed those close to McDaniels, including Bears assistant director of player personnel Champ Kelly and Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler.
Both Kelly and Ziegler worked with McDaniels during his short head coaching stint in Denver between 2009-10. Ziegler is also an early candidate in Las Vegas’ search for a general manager and he and McDaniels have been cited to be a package.
In 2018, McDaniels infamously agreed to be the Colts coach before bolting on the franchise to return to New England as offensive coordinator.
The Raiders’ former head coach Jon Gruden resigned in October after it was revealed that he used homophobic, racist and misogynistic language in emails when he was a “Monday Night Football” analyst.
Special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia was appointed interim head coach; under Bisaccia, the Raiders went 7-6 and earned a wild-card spot with a thrilling Week 18 win over the Chargers. Las Vegas lost a 26-19 wild-card matchup against the Bengals.
Bisaccia is also a candidate for the Raiders position, but team owner Mark Davis has said that he is looking at outside candidates as well.
McDaniels’ potential exit would leave Mac Jones without the offensive mind responsible for his impressive rookie-season development. It would also leave Bill Belichick without the coordinator responsible for the team’s Super Bowl wins.
