Josh Rosen enters game, immediately throws pick six as sad career continues

Josh Rosen just added another rough chapter to a rough NFL career.

The former No. 10 overall pick in the draft and current backup for the Falcons entered the game against the Patriots late in the fourth quarter, with Atlanta already trailing 19-0 and the game out of reach. But on his first possession, facing third and 5, Rosen threw a brutal pick six to Kyle Van Noy that extended the Patriots’ lead to 25-0.

The pass was intended for Russell Gage, who had sat down past the first down line, but Rosen didn’t see Van Noy screaming across the middle for what ended up being an easy interception. On the next series, Rosen was removed for third-stringer Feleipe Franks (who proceeded to throw another pick on his first pass attempt).

Rosen has now attempted 11 passes during three garbage-time appearances for the Falcons in 2021. In that limited action, he has as many completions (two) as he has interceptions.

Entering blowouts on an undermanned Falcons team isn’t exactly the recipe for success for any quarterback, but it’s still another sad entry for the former NFL Draft bust. The Cardinals traded up to take Rosen in the 2018 draft, but moved on from him after just one year when they came into position to draft Kyler Murray at No. 1 overall. The decision has aged remarkably well, with Murray blossoming into an MVP candidate.

Arizona traded him to the Dolphins, who were in the midst of an obvious tank job and ended up only giving him three starts – all losses. Miami released him after one year, and he bounced around on the 49ers and Buccaneers’ practice squad before landing a backup gig with the Falcons this season.

The horrific pick six in Thursday’s game didn’t inspire any hope that he has improved.
