Kim Kardashian ‘fought against’ her Met Gala 2021 look

Kim Kardashian’s much-discussed 2021 Met Gala outfit almost didn’t happen.

The reality star, 42, covers Vogue’s March 2022 issue, and opened up to the mag about her relationship with ex-husband Kanye West, parenting four children and her polarizing, face-obscuring Balenciaga look for last year’s ball.

“I fought against it. I was like, I don’t know how I could wear the mask. Why would I want to cover my face?” she told Vogue.

“But Demna [Gvasalia, Balenciaga’s creative director] and the team were like, This is a costume gala. This is not a Vanity Fair party where everyone looks beautiful. There’s a theme and you have to wear the mask. That is the look.”

Gvasalia expounded on the meaning behind Kardashian’s Met getup, noting that the mask was “conceptually speaking, quite important.”

“People would know instantly it was Kim because of her silhouette,” he said. “They wouldn’t even need to see her face, you know? And I think that’s the whole power of her celebrity, that people wouldn’t need to see her face to know it’s her.”

The sartorial connection between Gvasalia and Kardashian — which began thanks to West — was further cemented earlier this month, with the Skims founder starring in Balenciaga’s spring/summer 2022 campaign.

“I always think, ‘What will be next?’ Because I always had Kanye, who knew exactly what the next fashion era would be for me. And there’s something scary about being out there on your own, but also something so liberating,” Kardashian told Vogue of her ever-evolving style, which could certainly take a turn now that she’s dating Pete Davidson.

“Who knows? I might just be in Skims and be so comfy and casual and wear no makeup, and that might be what I feel like representing to the world. Maybe it’s just not that serious,” she said.
