Machine Gun Kelly revealed he hung out with “beautiful soul” Taylor Hawkins just two days before the Foo Fighters drummer’s death.
MGK and the rock band were on the billing for the Asunciónico music festival in Paraguay on March 22 when inclement weather caused both acts to cancel their headlining performances.
The “Bad Things” singer said on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show Wednesday that he was “super bummed” as the Foo Fighters were supposed to watch his set before taking the stage themselves.
Instead, the group’s lead singer, Dave Grohl, invited Kelly, 31, to his hotel to hang out on the rooftop. The rap-turned-punk star was initially nervous to go because he had a large entourage with him.
“I walked up, and I got out the elevator, all 20 of us, and Taylor, Dave, the whole Foo Fighters team but specially Taylor, he went up to every single one of us and gave us our moment,” Kelly recalled. “Every single one of us, down to my assistant. ‘You’re from Topanga? Oh, I’m from Topanga.’ Dude, such a beautiful soul.”
Kelly also shared that he and Hawkins had chatted about his performance as Tommy Lee in the 2019 Netflix movie “The Dirt,” which he said the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee complimented.
“The last thing he said to our drummer was, ‘I’m just so bummed I didn’t get to see you guys play,’” MGK said.
“I really want to thank him and let his kids know that he made us feel — in a time where the outside world was really coming in hard on us — he made us feel so confident in ourselves and loved, and your father is a great, great man, and we were all lucky to know him,” he concluded emotionally.
Hawkins was scheduled to play a music festival in Bogota on March 27 before he was found dead in his hotel room at the age of 50. He is survived by wife Alison Hawkins, whom he married in 2005, and their three children: Oliver, Annabelle and Everleigh.
The Foo Fighters were scheduled to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards. Instead, Hawkins will be honored during the broadcast this Sunday.
