Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday condemned a comment from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that claimed he “has weekly huddles [with] Exxon.”
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted the remark on Sept. 2 in response to an op-ed from Manchin that outlines why he won’t support President Biden’s $3.5 trillion spending plan.
“Manchin has weekly huddles w/ Exxon & is one of many senators who gives lobbyists their pen to write so-called “bipartisan” fossil fuel bills,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
“It’s killing people. Our people. At le ast 12 last night. Sick of this “bipartisan” corruption that masquerades as clear-eyed moderation,” she said.
In a Sunday interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Manchin called the claim “totally false.”
“Those types of superlatives, it’s just awful. And continue to divide, divide divide,’ Manchin said.
“I don’t know that young lady that well, I really don’t. I met her one time between sets here, but that’s it. We’ve not had any conversations. She’s just speculating and saying things” Manchin said.
