The court granted each party its own separate rights to the dual-use trademark. That was an unusual decision, but because of it the tournament has the name March Madness.

Even though March Madness may seem like a new competition, the first NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament was played back in 1939. Then, the competition only had eight teams. Oregon has the honor of being the first NCAA tournament champion. They beat Ohio State for the title.
