Matthew Perry put ‘a lot of pressure on himself’ during ‘Friends’

Matthew Perry put an intense amount of “pressure” on himself to get laughs on “Friends,” his former co-star and friend Courteney Cox said in a new interview.

“He’s just struggled for a while,” Cox told the Times of London in a new interview on Sunday. “I think he’s doing great now.”

The actress added that Perry — who previously admitted he would “freak out” if a line fell flat — put “a lot of pressure on himself.”

“That’s a lot to think how much he relied on that for his own self-worth,” Cox, 57, told the outlet.

During the widely viewed “Friends” reunion on HBO Max in May 2021, Perry said, “I felt like I was going to die if they didn’t laugh.”

Perry, 52, confirmed earlier this month that he’s writing a memoir — set to be released in November — about his time on the hit sitcom and his previous battle with addiction.

“So much has been written about me in the past. I thought it was time people heard from me,” he captioned an Instagram photo of the cover of the book, titled, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.”

“The highs were high, the lows were low. But I have lived to tell the tale, even though at times it looked like I wouldn’t. And it’s all in here. I apologize it’s not a pop up book.”

It was previously reported the “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” star inked seven figures in the book deal.

Perry famously said during a 2016 interview that he couldn’t remember filming multiple seasons of “Friends,” in which he played Chandler Bing.

“I don’t remember three years of it,” he told BBC Radio 2 at the time. “Somewhere between Seasons 3 and 6 … I was a little out of it.”

Cox, meanwhile, told the Times of London that she never gets sick of talking about the hit show.

“No, that was such a huge part of my life. It was such a lucky situation that I fell into the show, and I went through so many things in those 10 years,” she said.
