Less than a week ago, Steve Cohen fumed about losing out on signing Steven Matz, whom the Mets traded away 10 months earlier and who is 45-48 with a 4.24 ERA over seven mediocre seasons. Yesterday, the Mets owner landed Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and future Hall of Famer and strikeout artist whose prime remains in pristine condition.
It’s as if you woke up to learn someone stole your skateboard and later found a Ferrari parked in your driveway.
After failing to bring Matz and Noah Syndergaard back to Queens, it is stunning that Cohen and new general manager Billy Eppler convinced Scherzer to enter unfamiliar territory. It is shocking that the ultra-competitive Scherzer — who won a World Series with the Nationals in 2019 and has been to the playoffs eight times — would leave the 106-win Dodgers to join a team that hasn’t made the postseason since 2016 and currently doesn’t have a manager or coaching staff.
