NFL Draft 2022 top QB guide: Matt Corral, Kenny Pickett

The Jets need Zach Wilson to improve gradually, the Giants need Daniel Jones to improve quickly and both teams need the crop of 2022 NFL Draft-bound quarterbacks to improve at warp speed.

It would be a surprise if the Giants used either of their two first-round picks on a quarterback — even though assistant general manager Kevin Abrams was on hand for last week’s Pittsburgh-North Carolina game — because Jones still has one more season on his rookie contract at a team-friendly $8.3 million salary-cap charge. There is a near-zero percent chance of the Jets taking a quarterback with either of their two first-rounders.

But the best thing that could happen draft-wise to the Giants and Jets in the next few weeks would be for a mostly underwhelming class of quarterback prospects to finish strong and generate buzz heading toward Senior Bowl and NFL Combine season. That way, the Jets’ and Giants’ picks could become more in demand for suitors willing to build a package and trade up for a coveted quarterback — or other teams already near the top of the draft could be enticed to select quarterbacks and allow other premium talents to slip down the board.

Entering Thursday, the Jets were lined up to pick No. 3 and No. 7 (courtesy of a trade with the Seahawks) and the Giants were set pick No. 6 and No. 8 (courtesy of a trade with the Bears). The No. 1 Lions, No. 2 Texans, No. 5 (and No. 10) Eagles, No. 9 Washington and No. 11 Falcons are just some of the teams who could be in the market if quarterback stocks improve.
