NFL rookies guess their ratings

EA Sports’ “Madden” ratings are not always the nicest, especially to rookies.

With “Madden 22” releasing on Aug. 20, EA had first-year players guess their debut ratings. Consider the rookies surprised — and a little disappointed — by their debut numbers.

Take Patriots first-round pick, quarterback Mac Jones, for instance. When asked to take a stab at his mark for “Break Tackling,” the Alabama product said a 52 “would be incredible.”

It would, especially with his real rating being a 26.

“Oh my god!” he said, laughing. “No way, you’re trolling me. How many tackles have I even broken before.”

The guesses also came from shifty Jets receiver, Elijah Moore who figured his “Change of Direction” would be a perfect 100. Spoiler: It was not — though he wasn’t too far off with a 93.

“Who is above me?” Moore wondered. “‘Cause 93 kinda low, like. I really don’t know, nothing I can’t do.”

Lockdown corner Asante Samuel Jr. was not alone in thinking his speed rating could have been a bit higher, judging by his cousin’s reaction over the phone.

“Ninety-two speed, though. You’re moving, though. You’re moving,” Samuel’s cousin said. “I’m proud of you man. It should have been about a 94, but aye, you can get up there every week.”

Cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Patrick Surtain II will likely be out to prove themselves for next year’s edition, after finding their ratings far lower than expected.

“Y’all dead wrong,” Surtain said of his 75 awareness ratings — twenty points lower than he posited. “You got to change that.”

It wasn’t all overestimations, however. Jones, for instance, charitably gave himself an overall rating of 66 — with EA actually giving him a solid 71 score. Not too bad for a first-year QB.

“Okay, I’ll take that,” he said. “It’s alright. It’s not about where you start, it’s about where you finish.”
