Larger indoor arenas in New York can expand to 25 percent capacity from May 19 – while museums and zoos may increase up to 50 percent starting next week, Gov. Andrew Como announced Monday.
The Governor said that movie theaters will also be able to increase the number of movie fans in the seats by 33 percent by next Monday.
The expansion of indoor capacity at New York City-area sports venues such as Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island will come in time for the NBA and NHL’s later seasons.
This is good news for the Brooklyn Nets, who are essentially the lock to make the basketball playoffs, and the Knicks, who are likely to play post-season.
The New York Islanders hope the NHL can make the playoffs, even if the outlook for the Rangers falls short.
The huge sports facilities of local teams are currently allowed only 10 percent amid COVID-19 restrictions.
Museums and zoos in the state are currently at 33 percent, while movie theaters stand at 25 percent.
