Cops said the NYPD officer was in critical condition after colliding with a car on the Long Island Expressway in Queens on Tuesday morning.
According to police, when he was hit by a vehicle, the highway officer was investigating the previous accident on the highway at Fresh Meadows.
The officer was taken to New York-Presbyterian Queens in critical condition. The driver of the car was caught at the scene.
Police stopped eastbound traffic on the expressway as they investigated the crime.
The driver could not be identified in the early hours of Tuesday.
