Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t leave the best impression on Martellus Bennett.
Though Garoppolo only started two games at quarterback with the Patriots while Bennett was there in 2016 and 2017, his failure to fight through injury in Week 4 of the former season — when Tom Brady was suspended for Deflategate — still has Bennett riled up.
“Bro, we lost two games [that season],” Bennett said on the “Double Coverage with The McCourty Twins” podcast on Thursday. “One of them was because Jimmy Garoppolo was being a bitch. He decided not to play right before the game. Jacoby [Brissett] came out and played with a f–ked up thumb and played his heart out, but Jimmy was just being a bitch about it all.”
The Patriots were held scoreless by the Bills in that game before recovering to win the Super Bowl later that year.
“You can’t win with a bitch for quarterback, first of all,” Bennett said. “That was the whole thing with him. He didn’t want to come out and do anything because his agent was trying to protect his body or some s-t like that. Which, I can’t fault him for that. But like, you should have made that decision on Thursday. Now it’s Sunday.
“So anyways, he’s not going out there, so now Jacoby straps up and we lost to the Buffalo Bills. We shouldn’t have lost. It was just last-minute, trying to make adjustments for what Jacoby could do.”
The next year, Garoppolo was in San Francisco, having played well in what amounted to a two-game audition with New England.
It might have helped the Patriots to have him in that game against Buffalo, but given they went on to win the Super Bowl and Garoppolo got a starting job and a big contract, we’ll call it water under the bridge.
