NYPD officers opened fire on a black BMW they say tried to mow down several cops during a failed traffic stop near the Goethals Bridge.
The incident began just before 8 p.m. Thursday, when police attempted to pull over the BMW without a license plate in the 2600 block of Richmond Avenue.
The driver refused to stop and sped away, driving on the Staten Island Expressway, reported Staten Island Advance.
Cops tried to block traffic to prevent the BMW from getting onto the Goethals Bridge connecting Staten Island and New Jersey.
As officers stood in the road near the exit for Western Avenue, the driver of the BMW allegedly tried to strike them with the car.
One of the cops opened fire in the direction of the luxury vehicle, but the driver fled over the Goethals into New Jersey.
No injuries were reported as a result of the confrontation, but an officer was taken to a hospital for a checkup.
The cop who discharged the service weapon is now on modified duty, police said.
The NYPD has not revealed the reason for the initial traffic stop that led to the shooting.
As of Friday afternoon, no arrests have been announced and police had no information on the whereabouts of the black BMW and its driver.
