Shaun White was profoundly emotional after the final snowboarding run of his decorated Olympic career.
White, 35, finished fourth in the men’s halfpipe event in which he was the defending gold medalist.
“Yeah, sorry you’re gonna get me ugly crying here,” White began. “I’m not upset about the result. Obviously would’ve loved to put down that last run. I was having difficulties. … I was just muscling to make it happen — and I made it happen for two rounds! The last run, I just couldn’t hold on.”
White, who has won three Olympic gold medals in the halfpipe event, was filled with gratitude for those who h ave supported him for the past two decades.
“Yeah, a lot of emotions hitting me right now. Just the cheer of the crowd and some kind words from my fellow competitors at the bottom. I’m so happy. I just want to thank everybody for watching.”
At this moment, White broke down and had to pause.
“Everyone at home — thank you,” he said. “Snowboarding — thank you. It’s been the love of my life.”
NBC cut to his family in Los Angeles, as they loudly cheered for him. White could not hold back the tears.
“I love you guys. I love you so much. I wanted more today, but I’ll take what I can get. I’m proud. This has been my life. Thank you. I can’t wait to see you all.
