Sheldon Silver contemplates release from prison after less than a year

A spokesman on Tuesday said that the federal Bureau of Prisons has considered releasing New York’s former Speaker of the Assembly, Sheldon Silver, as soon as possible.

Silver has served less than a year of his 6-year sentence in federal prison for corruption-related offenses during his run as an Albany power broker.

But the BoP recently informed prosecutors in the Southern District of New York that it was considering cutting the silver slack when the house was closed, a spokesperson for the district told The Post.

The spokesman said that in response to an email sent yesterday, the prosecution office delivered a guilty verdict against Silver – insisting that it opposes the move.

Rajat was sentenced last summer after escaping a lockup for more than five years after being first convicted.

While serving his sentence, Judge Valerie Caproni called the crooked politician, who was convicted of illegally using his office to benefit two real estate developers in exchange for cash.

“This corruption was pure and simple,” Judge Caproni told the disgraced former speaker, whom he had already sentenced twice.

“The time, however, has now come to pay Piper for Mr. Silver,” Caproni said.

Upon being sentenced in Manhattan federal court, Silver apologized for his crimes – and his lawyer urged the judge to sentence him to a sentence due to his advanced age and a coronovirus epidemic.

His lawyer James Lunum said, “He does not deserve to die prematurely or die in prison.”
