It didn’t take long for Olympic gymnast Simone Biles to fall for her now-fiancé, Jonathan Owens.
During a joint appearance Friday on “TODAY,” the couple — who announced their Valentine’s Day engagement this week — opened up about the early stages of their relationship.
“We clicked really really well in the beginning because we’re athletes and we have the same busy schedules. But other than that, since it was kind of a COVID relationship, we’re with each other 24/7, so I feel like now when we’re not with each other it’s almost weird,” Biles said of Owens, whom she connected with on Instagram nearly two years ago.
“We’re always texting or calling each other. It’s kind of gross in a way.”
Biles, a seven-time Olympic medalist, made her relationship with Owens, a defensive back on the Houston Texans, Instagram official in August 2020. On Tuesday, Biles confirmed Owens had popped the question during a romantic Valentine’s date.
“THE EASIEST YES,” the 24-year-old exclaimed on Instagram. “I can’t wait to spend forever & ever with you, you’re everything I dreamed and more!”
Owens, 26, presented Biles with a stunning oval-cut diamond ring by Zo Frost.
“Jonathan has been a client and friend for a few years and I had the pleasure of helping him to create this very special ring,” Frost told Page Six Style on Tuesday.
“He and I started the process together a few months ago to select the perfect diamond for Simone that was handpicked by Jonathan.”
Owens, who recently wrapped his third season with the Texans, also told “TODAY” how someone near and dear to his heart had quickly fallen for Biles: his beloved dog Zeus.
“I could kind of see his face like whenever I would pick my bookbag up in my apartment, he would think we’re leaving to go to her place, so he would sprint to the front door. And I’d be like, ‘Huh, you really like her!”‘ Owens said.
As for when the couple will officially tie the knot, Biles said Friday they’ve started the process.
“We literally came back from a redeye from Vegas, did the engagement the 14th, and then I flew out so I didn’t get to see him for three days so I just got back yesterday,” she said. “We kinda started planning a little bit over the phone, but I’m sure we’ll do a lot of that today, but we have a couple of specs that we know, but it’s still in the process.”
