St. John's rips Xavier to keep slim NCAA tourney hopes alive

St. John’s turned in one of its most complete performances of the season

Julian Champagnie poured in 27 points to lead the Red Storm to an 86-73 win over the Xavier Musketeers on Wednesday night in Cincinnati.

Aaron Wheeler scored 11 points and added eight rebounds for St. John’s. Montez Mathis had 10 points, while Posh Alexander, coming off the bench, chipped in with eight points.

Jack Nunge had 22 points for Xavier.

With the victory, St. John’s improves to 14-11 (6-8 Big East). Xavier falls to 17-7 (7-7).

St. John’s next plays host to Butler on Friday at 5 p.m., while Xavier travels to UConn to face the Huskies on Saturday at 12 p.m.
