Their careers are headed in different directions.
State trooper Dane Pfeiffer — the love interest of one of disgraced ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s daughters who was a member of his security detail before the disapproving dad banished him to the Canadian border — is being promoted to sergeant and sent to New York City, The Post has learned.
Pfeiffer’s elevation in the ranks of the New York State Police will take effect on Thanksgiving Day as the jobless former chief executive continues facing the fallout for a myriad of documented misdeeds.
“Effective 11/25, Dane Pfeiffer will be promoted to the rank of sergeant and transferred to Troop NYC. This was the result of a competitive exam,” a state police source familiar with the process told The Post on Wednesday.
The “exam was April 6, 2019,” the source explained. “They promote from a list generated from that exam.”
In October 2020, The Post exclusively reported Cuomo requested that Pfeiffer, 36, be transferred from his security detail after he found out about his romance with Cara Kennedy Cuomo, his then-25-year-old daughter.
Pfeiffer — a hunky former collegiate tennis player at Skidmore College who graduated from the police academy in 2015 — and Kennedy-Cuomo began getting hot and heavy in early 2020. The pair met when Pfeiffer served as one of Cuomo’s bodyguards.
On May 24, Pfeiffer asked for a “voluntary transfer” to Troop B in northeastern New York, a state police spokesman told The Post at the time.
“He was transferred to keep him away from the daughter because the governor didn’t like whatever they were doing,” a source familiar with the situation previously told The Post.
Pfeiffer’s relationship with Kennedy-Cuomo, now 26, necessitated his removal from her dad’s protective detail because of “the protocol of dignitary protection,” a law enforcement source familiar with the situation told The Post last year.
But the move didn’t end the couple’s relationship, as Pfeiffer frequently came back to the Executive Mansion to pick up Kennedy-Cuomo for dates, angering the former governor, according to a source.
Pfeiffer hadn’t committed misconduct, so in an informal disciplinary practice known as “highway therapy,” he was reassigned to a state police station in Plattsburgh — about 25 miles south the Canadian border and about 160 miles north of the Capitol in Albany, sources said.
The governor, a source explained, was “limited in how much he can screw with him, so highway therapy is one of his few options.”
In response, Pfeiffer’s 95-year-old grandmother said Cuomo’s call was “ridiculous.”
“Dane has always been a wonderful, lovely, kind and considerate person,” Marianne Pfeiffer told The Post in November 2020. “I think he’s being ridiculous, because he’s always been a good friend of the family — and a good friend of Dane.”
It’s unclear if the trooper is still dating Kennedy-Cuomo.
Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi declined to comment. Pfeiffer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Pfeiffer’s promotion comes after a state Assembly probe found Cuomo — who resigned in August following the release of state Attorney General Letitia James’ monumental sexual harassment probe — sexually harassed 12 women, deliberately lowballed the number of COVID-19 nursing home deaths, and pressured state employees to help write his $5.1 million pandemic memoir.
In response to the report, released Tuesday, two former New York prosecutors blasted disgraced Cuomo on Tuesday for using government staffers to help write Cuomo’s “American Crisis: Leadership Lessons for the COVID-19 Pandemic.”
“The use of employees for personal gain is inappropriate,” ex-Brooklyn District Attorney Elizabeth Holtzman told The Post. “The former governor should work out an accommodation to repay the taxpayers of the state of New York for his use of these employees.”
After being sent packing from the Executive Mansion in Albany, the unemployed Cuomo is mulling a campaign to serve as state attorney general, the post he held before he was elected governor.
