In the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health of India reported another 2,767 deaths, taking the death toll to 192,311.

The rapid spread of coronaviruses – among a new type of virus – has resulted in pack cremation, forcing authorities to resort to mass cremation ceremonies while hospitals have run out of oxygen and drive away sick people.

“This virus is swallowing the people of our city like a monster,” said Mamtesh Sharma, an official of Bhopal’s Bhadbhada Vishram Ghat crematorium.

Activists there cremated 110 people on Saturday – even as the government said the total COVID deaths in the city stood at 1.8 million which was only 10.

Sharma said, “We are just burning the dead bodies.” “It feels like we’re in the middle of a war.”

The sheer number of bodies has caused cremation to give up personal ceremonies and rituals that believe that Hindus liberate the soul from the cycle of rebirth.
