Sweden, Latvia pulled the AstraZeneca vaccine amidst blood clotting risk

Two more EU countries stopped using AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday as the block’s health regulators investigated safety concerns, which hindered the shotout’s rollout.

Sweden And Latvia Joins a growing list of nations that suspended AstraZeneca’s pocket after a handful of people who developed it had blood clots, some of which were linked to death.

More than a dozen European Union member states – including major economies such as Germany, France and Italy – have temporarily vaccinated despite assurances from the British drugmaker and the World Health Organization that it is safe to use.

Health officials in Latvia and Sweden said they were prohibiting the use of shots as a precaution, while the European Drug Agency investigates cases of blood clots reported in places such as the EU Drug Regulator, Austria and Denmark .

The EMA’s Drug Safety Committee is slated to review information on cases on the Tuesday before Thursday’s meeting, where officials will determine what action they need to take.

in Statement On Monday, the agency insisted that the benefits of AstraZeneca vaccine reveal the risks of potential side effects. Health officials have said that there is no indication that the vaccine is the cause of blood clots.

“Experts are looking in great detail at all available data surrounding specific cases and clinical circumstances to see if the vaccine has contributed or if the event is likely to have been caused by other causes,” EMA said.

But it remains to be seen how the decision to temporarily end the shot in many countries will affect the pace of rollout.

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday, “Britain” has one of the toughest and most experienced regulators in the world. “They see no reason to discontinue the vaccination program.”
