Taylor Swift slammed Gorillaz musician Damon Albarn for claiming in a new interview that she “doesn’t write her own songs.”
Albarn, also known for being the frontman for the band Blur, sniffed at Swift co-writing her songs, telling the Los Angeles Times that it “doesn’t count.”
In response, Swift fired back on Twitter Monday, writing, “@DamonAlbarn I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this.
“I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t h ave to like my songs but it’s really f–ked up to try and discredit my writing. WOW.”
The Grammy winner then quipped, “PS I wrote this tweet all by myself in case you were wondering.”
During the LA Times interview with pop music critic Mikael Wood, Albarn said “I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes. Doesn’t mean that the outcome can’t be really great… I suppose I’m a traditionalist in that sense.”
Albarn, 53, also noted that he prefers the songs of Billie Eilish over Swift because they’re “darker” and “less endlessly upbeat.”
Swift famously writes all of her own songs, and has collaborated with a slew of musicians on several tracks throughout the years.
However, fans were quick to point out that she wrote every song on her 2010 album “Speak Now” by herself at the age of 19.
“Taylor swift didn’t write the entirety of speak now at 19 for someone to say this,” one Twitter user wrote, while others even theorized that Albarn’s comments could help usher in Swift’s next era.
“Speak now promo went crazy. Taylor even got some random man to discredit her so the era can be authentic. Genius work,” a fan joked on Twitter, referencing the widely-held theory that the next “Taylor’s Version” album Swift will re-record is “Speak Now.”
Following a feud with music industry executive Scooter Braun over control of her master recordings, the “Folklore” singer is currently in the process of re-recording her first six studio albums.
