And woman is going viral for taking a romantic vacation to the sunny Dominican Republic — a month after breaking up with her boyfriend of two years.
The ultimate TikTok twist: He went with her.
Lydia Bird and Jaeden Lemelin, both 18-year-old Connecticut residents, initially booked the trip to Puerto Plata in January for their spring break, never dreaming that their love bubble would soon burst.
Bird posted all about her zany adventure in several TikTok clips, racking up more than 13 million views and over 2.3 million likes.
“I ended up breaking up with him a little over a month before the trip,” Bird told Jam Press. “There were a variety of reasons, but basically things weren’t working and we ended things on relatively good terms.”
She initially planned to cancel the trip and didn’t expect any issues, however, after calling the company they booked with — the aptly named Cheap Caribbean — she found out that there was no way to cancel the trip and the tickets were non-refundable.
Bird then decided that instead of her ex, she would take her mother to the island destination — but the booking company informed her that mom would have to shell out bucks for her own vacation package.
After calling Jaeden and attempting to repay him for the non-transferrable ticket, he persuaded her to go on the trip with him.
“Although I was excited, I was very hesitant to travel especially because the breakup was so new,” Bird admitted. “I am a firm believer that exes can be friends, but one month was a short time to make that transition.”
To make matters worse, the flight to Puerto Plata was delayed over 10 hours and both Lydia and Jaeden spent most of the morning in the airport however, the ex-love birds finally managed to make it to the beach.
“We spent tons of time at the beach and pool. Weirdly, after two years being together this was our first big trip together even though we were broken up,” Bird said.
The trip was not always fun in the sun though. According to the newfound TikTok star, there were several moments that were tough.
“Traveling together this soon after the breakup was a challenge because he and I have been so close for so long,” Bird lamented.
“We dated for over two years and it wasn’t a ‘see each other a couple times a week’ relationship, we spent every day together, so we became insanely close.”
Lydia also mentioned that she and Jaeden had decided that no matter what happened, they must stay strictly friends.
However, some TikTok commenters chose to view the now-viral footage as the pathway for Bird and Lemelin to get back together and live happily ever after.
“Yep, they’re def gonna hook up,” one viewer commented as another quipped: “$20 they get back together.” One seemingly concerned viewer asked, “Girl are you alright?,” while another pithily dubbed the trip an “unhoneymoon.”
Meanwhile, other TikTok pundits related to the teens — and admitted they have done the same with their exes.
“I actually did this once — we called it our farewell tour and it was the best week of our relationship, we left on a good note with good memories,” another user said, spurring another to chime in: “I went to Disney with mine, it was a $5K trip [so] I wasn’t wasting it.”
