The resentment among Republicans sparked when the head of the Democratic Party in the county of Texas resigned on Tuesday, when he described Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) as an “Orio”.
Now-Lamar County Democratic Party President Gary O’Connor, who is white, Told the Washington Examiner In a statement that he was “deeply and sincerely sorry” for using the “racist word” against Scott, one of three black senators and the only black Republican.
“It was insensitive and I have embarrassed myself and my party with its use,” O’Connor’s statement read.
O’Connor used profanity, usually used to describe a black person who is treated like a typical white person, after Scott at President Joe Biden’s address in a joint session of Congress last week Scott gave in on his personal Facebook page following a formal Republican response.
“I hoped Scott could show some common sense, but it’s clear that he was little more than an Orio with no real theory,” the post read, which was later removed.
Texas Republican Government. Greg Abbott calls for O’Connor to resign from his post and apologize to Scott, as well as the former county chairman for the Texas Democratic Party.
Rep. Pat Falon (R-Texas), whose district includes part of Lamar County, Denied O’Connor’s comment on Friday As “abusive, insulting and unforgivable”.
O’Connor was not the only person to have targeted Scott with such vitriol. Twitter allowed the phrase “Uncle Tim” to last hours after his remarks, in which Scott insisted that America “is not a racist country.” Twitter eventually blocked the phrase from trending, but a tweet containing a modified version of the “Uncle Tom” insult was allowed.
