Truck collapses in Southampton after witnessing fatal accident

A driver was killed and at least three people were injured in a back-to-back crash in Hampton on Thursday afternoon.

State police said the sunrise began around 1:45 a.m. on the highway when a vehicle ended up in the eastbound lane while exiting Southampton.

Officials said the driver died on the spot in the accident and another was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center. There were no passengers in any of the vehicles, troopers said.

Some time later, a tractor trailer slowed down while it passed the crash, and was rear-ended by three other vehicles, police said.

Two people involved in the second accident were hospitalized with injuries, according to police.

Eastbound 61 and 63 exits, both were closed for a time on Route 27 as officers tried to clear up the accidents, the Safolk County Police Tweeted.

The killed driver has not been identified, and there is no word on any arrests as investigators have been involved in both accidents.
