Two more New York counties now qualify for federal assistance to help cover the cost of damages from Hurricane Ida’s devastating floods, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Sunday.

Local governments in Suffolk and Sullivan counties are eligible to receive public money thanks to the move, and residents in Suffolk County also qualify for individual aid.

“We are working tirelessly with our partners at all levels of government to ensure that families and communities recovering from the effects of Ida get the help they need to rebuild,” Hochul said in a statement announcing the additional help.

At least 18 people died in the state from Ida’s floodwaters earlier this month.

Thirteen of the victims lived in New York City — with most of them becoming trapped in flooded basements in Queens and Brooklyn.

New York’s Bronx, Queens, Kings, Richmond and Westchester counties were already covered for individual assistance.
