Windows, doors broken at four Jewish centers in Bronx: Police

Four Jewish centers in the Bronx have recently been covered with rocks – prompting an investigation by the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force, police said Sunday.

Riverdale Jewish Center, Chabad of Riverside, Young Israel of Riverdale and Conservative Synagogue Edith Israel of Riverdale were attacked on Friday and Saturday, police said.

Police said the unidentified male was seen throwing rocks after midnight on Friday at 535 West 246th Street in Chabad, Riverside.

Some time later, a suspect was seen throwing two rocks at the front door of the Riverside Jewish Center at 3700 Independence Avenue, shattering the doors. Windows in the center was broken at around 11:45 am on Friday.

On Saturday, windows were broken on both Young Israel of Riverdale and Conservative Synagogue Edith Israel of Riverdale, police said.

The motive for the attacks was unknown but the Hate Crime Task Force of the NYPD is investigating, police said.

“The investigation is active and ongoing by the 50th Precinct Detective Squad and the Hate Crime Task Force,” a NYPD statement said.

According to police figures, hate crimes have increased in the city over the past year, but hate acts among Asian Americans have increased rapidly.
