Here are some notable nuggets that happened during Yankees’ spring training action on Saturday:
Sharp defense
Third baseman Josh Donaldson flashed his defense on multiple occasions, beginning with the first play of the game when he charged a ground ball and fired to first on the run to throw out Orlando Arcia. Donaldson, who was nursing a sore shoulder earlier in the week, also made a nice play to his left on Austin Riley later in the inning then made a strong throw on another ground ball in the second.
Bad luck
Joey Gallo ripped a 111.9 mph line drive in the first inning, but it went directly into the glove of right fielder Eddie Rosario, who then threw home to nab a tagging-up Anthony Rizzo at the plate. The Yankees tied the Royals last year by having a league-high 22 runners thrown out at home.
Caught my eye
Staring down a completely open left side of the infield with the Braves shifting him, Aaron Hicks laid a bunt down the third base line to take an easy single in the second inning. Hicks said last spring he would consider bunting more to beat the shift, but he did not attempt any bunts in 32 games last season.
Sunday’s schedule
Clarke Schmidt will get the start as the Yankees visit the Blue Jays at 1:05 p.m. at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Fla.
