Yankees whip Orioles behind strong Domingo German debut

BALTIMORE – Domingo German will probably never return to minors anytime soon.

The Yankees strengthened the right-hander again on Saturday, winning the Camilla Yards 8-2 at the Camden Yards.

The right-hander allowed one run in six innings and an undermanned Yankees lineup still had plenty of firepower to beat the Orioles.

Despite playing without Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks and Gleeber Torres, the Yankees scored their highest scoring game of the month and earned their sixth win in seven games.

Meanwhile, the Germans have continued their impressive run since returning from the minors in April.

After giving up seven runs in seven innings in his first two outings of the season, the German improved to 3–0 with a 2.08 ERA, joining the rotation in five starts in 30 ₃ / ₃ innings with 30 strikeouts. .

DJ Lemahieu led the game against right-hander George Lopez and followed up with a line drive from singles to left, the first hit of the season after Luke Voight missed 34 games to start the year following left knee surgery.

Aaron Judge then went on to load the bases for Friday night’s pinch-hit hero, Gio Urshela.

With a chance to give the Yankees an edge again, Urshella looked outside.

A batter later, with Gary Sanchez at the plate, got the Yankees their first run. Orioles catcher Chance Cisco allowed a ball to pass through his feet for a passed ball, allowing Lemahieu to score and move on to the other runners.

Sanchez then took a 3–0 lead with a two-run single in the middle.

After Brett Gardner was dismissed, Clint Frazier was drilled in the left elbow at a speed of 95 mph.

Miguel Andujar walked off the field to end Lopez’s 39-pitch first innings.

The German followed an earlier long top with a dominant half inning, retiring the side on 10 pitches – nine strikes.

Tyler Wade made his second start with a ground ball on third baseman Rio Ruiz, who was transferred towards shortstop. Ruiz threw the ball away, but was dubbed a hit and Wade was thrown out trying to steal another.

The Yankees took a lead later in the inning on a single by Lemahieu and a two-out, two-run homer by the judge. The explosion was the judge’s third homer in two games and gave the Yankees a 5–0 lead.

As the German rolled, Lopez lasted only two innings, replaced by Keegan Akin in third.

The German got out of trouble at the bottom of the third with the help of his defense.

The Orioles had their first hit of the game with Ruiz leading the inning. The German whispered to Pat Wallika before Cisco doubled, sending Ruiz to third. A walk by Cedric Mullins loads the bases.

Acting pitching coach Mike Harky, filling in for Matt Blake when he was out with the COVID-19, went to the mound and Austin Hays finished third with a fast grounder. Ursella catches it and starts a nice double game. The Orioles challenged the out call to first base, but were retained.

The Yankees’ offense did not decrease. He loaded the bases with one of the sixth against Akin.

Akin was replaced by Tyler Wells, who went bald before the pitch was thrown, giving Gardner the third score. LeMahieu struck out, but Voight gave up his first run of the year with a two-run single to make it 8–0.

Baltimore scored a run out off the German ball in the sixth. With runners on the corners and one out, a Trey Mancini grounder drove to Cisco for third, but Ursella made a stunning throw to get Mancini in the first.

German was replaced by Lucas Luetge after the sixth.
