Police sources quoted the Post as saying that an Asian man in East Harlem is fighting for his life in the early hours of Saturday.
The shocking attack by a suspect comes amid large-scale hate crimes against Asian-Americans in the Borough and beyond.
The NYPD hate crime task force is under investigation; Sources said that the police have not determined whether the man was targeted due to his race.
The victim, who was not identified and who police believe is in his 60s, was attacked from behind as he drove at the foot of an under-construction 19-story apartment building at 3-Avenue and 125th Street Bins were collected.
Police sources present at the scene said that the suspect took his victim to the pavement and hit him on the head. Police said the victim suffered a serious head injury and was in critical condition.
Blood was released at the site of the attack early Saturday. A shopping cart filled with victims’ cans and bottles lurched behind as NYPD investigators searched the scene for clues.
According to police, officers alerted criminals to report an unconscious man when a bus driver called 911 at 8:20 pm.
On Thursday, the US Senate passed a bill directing the Justice Department to speed up its review of anti-Asian racist harassment and attacks – which have spread across the country during the coronovirus epidemic.
