China has recorded its highest number of new domestically-transmitted COVID-19 cases in 21 months.
The National Health Commission reported 158 cases that were the result of community spread on Sunday, the highest since the early months of the pandemic in March 2020.
The case numbers have been driven up by an outbreak in the northwestern city of Xian.
Xian reported 155 new domestically-transmitted cases, bringing the total to nearly 500 over the past few weeks.
“In the coming days, a number of cases are still likely to be detected,” Xian official He Wenquan warned.
He said the city managed to quickly detect those cases through three rounds of mass testing.
“In order to quickly screen out the infected groups of people, after an analysis by experts, we will step up control measures in key areas, especially places with greater risk level,” He said.
Residents in Xian are not allowed to leave town without approval from employers or local authorities
The city said no new cases have been caused by the Omicron variant, though it has been detected elsewhere among international travelers and in southern China.
