‘Cobra Kai’ star Tanner Buchanan was ‘kind of’ a nerd as a kid

Tanner Buchanan admits he was “kind of” a nerd growing up.

The “Cobra Kai” star told Page Six that he’s nothing like his troubled character, bad boy Robby Keene, who’s landed in reform school and is under the sway of nefarious Sensei John “No Mercy” Kreese (Martin Kove).

“I’m very much the opposite of Robby,” Buchanan, 23, told us. “I’ve been acting since I was a kid, so I was very much focused, because I knew this is what I wanted to do and I had to be very professional.”

He added, “You had homework to do and I’d get home from set and do homework into the night, go to sleep. I was very driven and knew what I wanted to do.”

Buchanan said he was often cast as the nerd prior to landing the Netflix series, and felt like one in real life, too.

“I didn’t hang out with a lot of people. I always kept to myself,” he confessed. “My favorite thing to do when I had time off was to play the guitar and watch the History Channel. I still like to do that … that was my jam back then, and now.”

Buchanan began his career as a dancer and transitioned into acting. He appeared in shows like “Modern Family,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Goldbergs” before landing the role of Johnny Lawrence’s (William Zabka) troubled son in Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” and heartthrob Cameron Kweller in “He’s All That.”

Buchanan told Page Six that he doesn’t “really pay attention” to his newfound fame or his legion of swooning fans.

“I’m very much appreciative of what I can do, and people love the show,” he said. “This is one of my dream jobs, that’s the way I look at it … I’m just glad people like the show.”

As for what “Cobra Kai” fans can expect from the upcoming fourth season? Get ready for “intense” action scenes, Buchanan teased.

“This is definitely one of the most intense seasons we’ve had,” he enthused. “One of the most action-packed. The world has expanded so much. We’re bringing in new people and people from the original franchise, and in my opinion, people are going to think this is the best season yet.”

Season 4 of “Cobra Kai” begins streaming Friday on Netflix.
