Deivi Garcia makes statement in bid to make Yivees rotation

LAKELAND, Fla. – Devi Garcia looked sharp in three century innings on Tuesday in a 6-5 loss to the Tigers at Jockey Merchant Stadium.

The right-hander scored five runs and allowed just one pair of hits in another solid outing in his attempt to make the opening day rotation.

“I feel really good,” Garcia said through an interpreter. “All my pitches were working exactly the way I wanted them to.”

Garcia was also able to avoid mistakes he made in his previous start, when he allowed a pair against the Phillies in a two-on-two solid performance.

“Some of the things I wanted to do in this outing were to make better decisions about pitches and counts,” Garcia said. “Today, I felt there was quality behind those pitches. I was commanding the areas where I wanted to attack. “

Garcia topped 95 mph in his 37-pitch outing, a slightly higher velocity than the 21-year-old usually shows.

Garcia was so skilled, manager Aaron Boone said, that he put a few more pitches in the bullpen.

He also went up against 37-year-old Miguel Cabrera in the second innings and allowed singles.

“It was fun to encounter a legend in this way,” Garcia said.
