Skiing
Visit Colorado in the winter if you want to enjoy some fantastic skiing. The southern part of the Rocky Mountains sits in Colorado so you will be spoilt for skiing locations. If you are feeling particularly glamourous then head to Aspen where the rich, famous, and Royalty from all over the world like to spend their winter holidays. Perfect your technique or just enjoystar spotting while sitting in the bars and cafes.
Hiking
If you wait until the springtime when the snow has cleared, Colorado is the perfect place to go hiking. The state has four large national parks. The Rocky Mountain National Park is a fabulous place to go hiking as it caters to everyone from the very experienced down to people who just want to go for a wander about.
Take off to the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park if you want to hike around some dramatic scenery. These black veined rocks are breath-taking, but it is steep so not brilliant for beginners. However, it is possible to drive around the canyon and go for a walk around on flatter ground if you are feeling less energetic.
Visit Denver
Denver is the state capital of Colorado and, as you can imagine, it is a vibrant city full of theaters, bars, and restaurants. Denver houses some good casinos, but if you do not want to visit the ones published in the guidebooks, you will be able to access some fantastic online sites from your hotel room too.You can stay anywhere from The Four Seasons to a more budget option to suit your wallet and lifestyle.
Denver is famous for its breweries too, so don’t forget to check some of these out while you are there. They brew some great local beers, and the surrounding region is famous for its wines too.
Go Surfing
Colorado is landlocked but that doesn’t mean you can’t go surfing. The locals enjoy sand surfing at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. It is only a short walk from the carpark to the nursery slopes but once you have conquered these, you can go further into the park to find some more advanced dunes. You will need a special sandboard for this as snowboards aren’t suitable. If you don’t fancy standing up, you could always try sand-sledding instead.
Visit a Ghost Town
The population of Colorado grew enormously in the mining boom of the early 1900s. However, when the industry started struggling, people moved out of the area and left their abandoned towns behind them. These days, tourists visit these towns to get an idea of what life was like in an early 20th century mining town.
St Elmo was abandoned in the 1920s, but you can still see about 40 preserved buildings from the era including the jail, a bar, and a general store.
Take a Trip onthe Railroad
In a mountain state full of ghost towns, you would be expected to take a trip on a nostalgic railroad, wouldn’t you? Well, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad certainly won’t disappoint you. This is a railway track built in the 1880s to carry the gold and silver that was being mined locally. These days you can take a trip on the steam train, diesel train, or the Canyon Express. Whichever one you choose, the scenery is still absolutely stunning.
Visit Red Rocks Amphitheater
This is a wonderful theater carved out of the cliffs and surrounded by tall sandstone structures. If you can tear your attention away from the amazing concerts and performances that you can see in this theater, you will find the surroundings magnificent to look at. The cliffs also make the theater’s acoustics sound tremendous,and a live performance here is something you simply have to see according to locals.
Even if your schedule doesn’t allow you to watch a live performance while you are here, it is certainly worth visiting in the daytime so that you can look around the theater and enjoy the scenery while it is closed. There are several hiking trails around the theater, and you can visit the Hall of Fame to see which famous stars have performed at the venue in the past.
