An Illinois high school student has died after he fell in a freak accident following his school’s homecoming parade, officials said.

Heath Toothman, 17, a student at Eldorado High School, lost his balance jumping off of the senior float on the way back from the parade on Thursday and hit his head, according to a statement from school officials.

He was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

In his obituary, he was remembered for “always showing his smile and fun-loving personality with his unique ability to light up a room.”

“He loved playing Fortnite, camping, fishing and the Eldorado High School Art Club,” the obituary said.

School officials said they were offering counseling services to students in the wake of his death.

“We also will be having multiple school and community events in the next few days to make sure our students who witnessed the accident and Heath’s friends have all of the support they need,” Ryan Hobbs, superintendent of Eldorado Unit District 4, wrote in a letter to staff, students and their families.

“Today, we have our middle school open and staffed with teachers and counselors for any students who need help or just need to talk. If you have a student or know a student who needs help, please encourage them to call or stop by.”
